The Indian Golden Chariot Luxury Tourist Train is a special tourist train which has train tours from Bangalore to Goa and back. The tour starts from Bangalore or Goa and is a great way to see the important tourist spots of Karnataka and Goa.

The coaches of Golden Chariot Train are coloured purple and gold, and have the logo of a mythological animal with the head of an elephant and a body of a lion. The Golden Chariot operates weekly. The Golden Chariot Train has two tours, one called ‘The Pride of South' and the other is called 'The Splendour of the South'.

The Golden Chariot Train tour called ‘The Pride of South' includes the tourist destinations of Bangalore, Kabini, Mysore, Hassan, Hospet (for Hampi - Vijayanagara), Badam and Goa. This weekly tour has trains starting from both Bangalore and Goa. The tourist attractions seen during the trip include the Nagarhole National Park, Mysore Palace, Srirangapatna forts, Hampi / Vijayanagr ruins, Hoysaleswara Temple, Gomateshwara and the Badami Cave Temples.

What to see in Mysore

The Mysore Palace: Mysore Palace is one of the important sights in Mysore. The Palace has exquisite carvings and works of art, intricately carved doors and luxuriously furnished rooms. The jewel studded golden throne of the Wodeyars, the ex-Maharajas of Mysore, is displayed here during the Dasera festival. Illuminated on Sundays and public holidays, it is a sight to be seen.

Srirangapatna Mysore: Srirangapatna Mysore was the capital when Tippu Sultan ruled Mysore and he died fighting the English in battle in 1799. Tippu Sultan was wielding his famous sword when he died battling the British 1799. The spot in the fort area where Tippu Sultan fell and breathed his last is marked and is often visited by many people.

Kabini: Rajiv Gandhl National Park, Nagarhole (Kabini) also known as the Nagarhole National Park was the hunting grounds of the Mysore Maharajas. Safari are arranged to go into the jungle to see wild animals living in the wild. It is also a treasure trove for bird watchers.

Belur, Halebid and Shravanabelagola: Belur has the famous Hoysola Temple and the Chennakesava Temple. Halebidu was the capital of the Hoysala Kingdom and has fine temples. Shravanabelagola has the world's tallest monolithic statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali and is a holy place from Jain religion.

Hampi: Hampi ruins, spread over an area of more than 25 square kilometres (10 square miles). Hampi ruins are full of giant temples, palaces, fortifications, etc. In 1986, UNESCO declared the group of monuments at Hampi as a World Heritage site. Hampi was the capital of the powerful Vijaynagara.

Badami: The cave temples of Badami date back to 600 and 700 AD and are an important tourist destination.

Pattadakal is a World Herltage Site with nine Hindu temples outstanding for their rich carvings.

Aihole has many temple complexes and is a very popular tourist spot in north Karnataka.

Goa

Goa: is a very tourist destination in South India. Panjim is the state's capital. Vasco da Gama is the largest city and Margao is the main Railway Station. Popular beaches in Goa are Baga, Calangute, Colva and Anjuna. Goa has World heritage sites listed as' Convents and Churches of Goa' which includes the Basilica of Bom Jesus Church where the body of Saint Francis Xavier lies.
